The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary is based between Shanklin and Ventnor on the road to Wroxall and we are open all year round from 10:00am till 4:30pm.. Everyone is welcome to come and visit our lovely donkeys including well-behaved dogs. The charity relies entirely on donations, adoptions and the many fundraising activities held throughout the year. The prime aim of the sanctuary is to provide a home for unwanted donkeys.

Usually there are more than 100 animals in our care – usually over 90 donkeys and 25 horses and ponies. These animals have led a variety of lives, but they all have one thing in common – they need a home. The reasons for needing a home can be varied:

  • Losing their grazing
  • Their owners circumstances change and they need to leave their animals
  • Abandonment
  • Rescued from poor circumstances
  • Given to us by other rescue organisations

Our animals live in over 55 acres of beautiful countryside and have a variety of indoor stables, barns and field shelters to make their lives as comfortable as possible.

In order to ‘pay the bills’ the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary is a visitor attraction.

Admission is free and the Sanctuary is open 7 days a week. We also runs additional special events during special occasions throughout the year.

A calendar of events appears on the website. CLICK HERE to be taken directly through…

Although admission is free, there are a number ways that people can contribute to the running costs of the sanctuary. There is a gift shop and café, a bric a brac shop, and a number of opportunities for people to donate through our donation boxes. People adopt donkeys and in so doing become ‘members’ of the sanctuary, in that they get regular information about the progress and activities of the donkeys and activities on site.

Additionally, people are able to donate legacies and we are grateful to supporters who kindly leave money in their wills to help us with our work.

New ventures for the Sanctuary will include birthday parties, ‘caring for a donkey’ days and ‘leading a donkey’ days.

The shop has a wide range of gifts available with several themed products which would make ideal presents, including a clothing range.
